The evening of Wednesday, April 8th marks the beginning of the celebration of Passover, also known as Holy Week. Although Passover is primarily celebrated by the Jewish faith, others are starting to participate. So what is the significance of Passover and why is it celebrated? I’m so glad you asked!
Although, there are many facets that go into the celebration of Passover, the ultimate signi
ficance is that it is the celebration of the emancipation of the children of Israel from slavery to the Egyptians. The night they were freed, is the night of the tenth and final plague, where the first born would be killed. The children of Israel were told to apply the blood of a lamb on their doorposts, so that when the death angel came to slay the first born, he would pass over their home, because of the blood. Recently on social media people began posting pictures of their first born. Each time I would see the phrase “your first born” I kept feeling that there was more to it than just posting a picture. Later I was reminded of the accounts in the bible about the first born, of which many referred to sacrificing or slaying. I began praying and applying the blood of Jesus over all the first born and especially those that had been displayed on social media. The slaying of the lamb was a precursor to the slaying of Jesus, and today we can still apply the blood of Jesus over every entry way of our homes and hearts to protect us from all hurt, harm and danger.
Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Pick out and take lambs for yourselves according to your families, and kill the Passover lamb. And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the [a]lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever. It will come to pass when you come to the land which the Lord will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service. And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ ” So the people bowed their heads and worshiped. Then the children of Israel went away and did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. — Exodus 12:21-28 NKJV
The celebration itself lasts eight days, and prior to the first night there is a purging of any items that contain leavened grain. On the first night, there is an actual burning of all remaining items containing leaven. The leaven is symbolic to anything that would be impure or displeasing to God. As believers, we can take this time to do some self-reflection and call on the Holy Spirit to reveal our impure motives, thoughts, behavior, etc., and then allow the fire of the Holy Spirit to burn those things out of us through the word of God. Eight represents a new beginning, so the expectation is to come out of this celebration with a new mindset, a new attitude and a new hunger for the things of God.
So your challenge this week is to ask God to search your heart and show you things that could potentially bring about a spiritual disconnection. Don’t just do it for Holy Week, but make it a part of your weekly regimen. In your prayer time apply the blood of Jesus to your mind, your heart, your family, your business, your ministry and everything connected to you. Incorporate Psalms 91 in your prayers, as well. Lastly, decree and declare that just as the death angel passed over the homes of the children of Israel, you are passed over! Until next week…
Be blessed, but first comes obedience!
